I don't even need to tell you how good this tastes! These little triangles of joy come courtesy of Bethany and Rosalie's Thai grandma. They're shallow fried in a modest amount of oil, rather than being deep-fried, which makes them much less daunting for a home cook. I love the addition of minced pork and the cucumber pickle on the side is also 🔥

Libyan hospitality is so warm, that Awwab and Sarah's mum actually made the dish and brought it to school pick up when she gave me the written recipe ❤️

Stuffed peppers are a favourite dish all around the Mediterranean, but I particularly love the fact that in this one, the rice goes into the peppers raw, so there's no worrying about whether you've under or over cooked it in the parboiling stage.

This dish is a great example of using just a little bit of meat to enhance the flavour of a dish (in this case minced lamb), which is great if you're cutting down. To make the dish vegan, simply replace with finely chopped mushrooms.

This is one of the first recipes I tested and photographed for the book back in May. It was shared by Sofia and her Turkish mum and we've made it many times over the summer. I always thought that the filo pastry for borek was layered with butter, like a sort of savoury baklava, so this was a real eye-opener for me! Layering with a mixture of milk and water and just a tablespoon of olive oil makes for a much moister, more bread-like pastry - more affordable, better for heart health and completely delicious ❤️

Happy new year! I've had a bit of a break from socials, but I thought this cheerful pic from our school recipe book would be a good way to settle back in ❤️

This recipe is one of my own. It was a sort of edible craft project for the children during the first COVID lock down and here it serves as a reminder to all of us as the January blues set in, that at least it isn't January 2021 when many of us were having to homeschool under duress!

The cook book also includes the method for easy stick blender mayonnaise (which is now the only mayonnaise we ever have in the fridge!) and a fool-proof method for peeling boiled eggs.

This is the usual Carter family fruit cake recipe from my website, but with the addition of a generous layer of homemade marzipan. It was covered in a bit of a rush, due to all the other festive and birthday baking activities over the last couple of weeks, but I couldn't resist getting the cable knit mould out again!

I can't believe my little girl is 9 years old today! She always loves the idea of birthday cake, but cake itself isn't her favourite sweet treat, so this year we decided to make a gingerbread house for her party instead.

I asked if she wanted me to make it as a surprise or if she'd like to help me and she said she wanted to help (that's my girl!). It was such a lovely project to work on together - especially shopping for the sweets at Winchester's @oldfashionedsweetieshop I think it's going to become a birthday tradition from now on - she's already planning next year's! ❤️

My daughter is turning 9 tomorrow and asked if she could have some friends round for a craft party. These are the prototypes I've come up with for us to make this afternoon!

I'm feeling pretty nervous about being so outnumbered by the small people - wish me luck! 😂

Welsh cakes, from Celebrate Taste, Reduce Waste

This beautifully simple recipe has been passed down to Poppy by her Pops, who can remember making them with his Nana.

There's something so special about inherited recipes. They can evoke nostalgia or act as a time machine to give us a taste of eras before us.

This project has been a good excuse for our school families to get those recipes out of grandparents' heads and down on paper. It's something I'd recommend to anyone, and Christmas is the perfect time to do it! If your family member only cooks by eye, spend some time with them in the kitchen, slip a set of scales under the bowl and take notes. I promise you won't regret it ❤️
