Breakfast: Gooseberry breakfast pots (196 calories)

Lunch: Broad bean, pea and parmesan salad (200 calories)

Dinner: Szechuan pork in lettuce wraps (182 calories)

= 578 calories

Fasting on a Friday can make you feel a bit hard-done-by, so it’s all the more important to make sure you get maximum flavour out of each calorie.

Alton Show Cookery Theatre 2013

I had a great time in the cookery theatre on Sunday, catching up with some of Hampshire’s loveliest producers and compering for some really interesting and varied demonstrators. I took over the stove for the 2pm slot, cooking with some of the fantastic products sold by the stallholders in the local food tent. These are the recipes if you fancy having a go at home.

Breakfast: Poached eggs with chilli and soy (175 calories)

Lunch: Green bean, courgette and samphire salad (177 calories)

Dinner: Chicken meatball broth (198 calories)

= 550 calories

Add 150 g fresh strawberries (50 cal) to make it up to a 600 man calorie day.

Due to various foodie engagements, we had to do 2 fast days back-to-back this week which also coincided with our swimming days. I tried to pick the most filling and sustaining recipes for fast day 10 to keep us going and I’m relieved to say, they did the trick.

Spiral meringues with raspberries and cream

Lunch: Spiced parsnip soup (151 calories)

Dinner: Garlic and herb roasted tomatoes (178 calories)

= 499 calories

For a man’s 600 calorie day, add:

Snack: 12 g (about 27) wasabi peas (48 calories)

Dessert: Strawberry, ginger and lime sorbet (50 calories)

Breakfast: Apricot and ginger porridge (201 calories)

Lunch: Asian omelette rolls (193 calories)

Dinner: Vegetable stir fry (160 calories)

= 554 calories (plus mandarin jelly for Justin – 39 calories)

Today was the last fast day before a much-anticipated trip to France to see my folks. This is where those feast days really come into their own! Whether my resolve to continue the fast days remains after a couple of days of beautiful bread, rillettes and wine, we’ll just have to wait and see…

Breakfast: Poached eggs with chilli and soy (175 calories)

Lunch: Smoked salmon and dill cream cheese crispbreads (199 calories)

Dinner: Lamb and lentil koftas with tzatziki (196 calories)

= 570 calories

Although this wasn’t the most nutritionally balanced day, being rather higher in protein and with fewer vegetables than previous days, it was definitely the menu that kept away hunger the most impressively. It also incorporated enough treats that it didn’t actually feel like a fast day!

Breakfast: Stewed apple breakfast pots – 195 calories

Lunch: Chicken meatball broth – 198 calories

Dinner: Carrot and feta salad – 204 calories

= 597 calories

Although our energy was running low after 2 fast days in a row, it wasn’t as much of a trauma as I’d anticipated and now there’s 4 whole feast days ahead to look forward to. That said, I’m going to try my best to make the fast days non-consecutive from now on – there’s definitely more of a temptation to cheat when you get to the end of day 1, knowing there’s another 24 hours of fasting ahead of you.

Breakfast: Prune and vanilla porridge – 193 calories

Lunch: Slow-roasted tomato and red onion soup – 180 calories

Dinner: Smoked Haddock with celeriac and spinach mash – 181 calories

= 554 calories

It seems like ages since the last fast day and we’ve had plenty of indulgences in between, so I feel ready for another 500 – 600 calorie day. Apart from the small portion sizes, this menu didn’t really feel like ‘special diet food’ and there wasn’t any point in the day that I felt particularly hungry.

Wedding cupcakes

This weekend I had the honour of making a cupcake wedding cake for two very good friends of mine. They both love their food, so rather than go down the traditional wedding breakfast route, they made the whole day a celebration of their favourite flavours and venues. We enjoyed a stunning Thai banquet at Winchester’s Bangkok Brasserie at lunchtime and in the evening we were treated to a wonderful Uptons of Bassett barbecue. In between we went to the fabulously quirky Black Bottle wine bar to avail ourselves of the enomatic dispensers and the cakes were served.
