Since returning from France our eating-out diary has gone a bit crazy. More often than not we’re having to do 2 fast days in a row and looking at the diary for the week ahead, I can see we’re going to have to attempt a 3 consecutive fast day marathon on Sunday, Monday & Tuesday. That really will test the sustaining power of these recipes to the limit!

Bengal Sage tasting menu with Saurav Nath and Toscanaccio

Jul 12, 2013   //   by susie   //   Blog, Restaurant Reviews  //  Comments Off

The Bengal Sage has become a Winchester institution in the 3 short years since taking up residence on George Street. It’s the place that locals in-the-know go to wallow in slow-cooked buffalo bhuna heaven and enjoy surely the best onion bhajis in the country. Like any good neighbourhood restaurant, they like to keep things interesting for their regular customers by putting together special seasonal menus and holding one-off events, with proceeds often going to local charities.

This week saw the return of guest chef, Saurav Nath, with a summer-inspired 6-course tasting menu. Wine-matching came courtesy of Mirko Alighieri from Toscanaccio, the excellent wine-merchant-cum-deli-cum-wine-bar just round the corner on Parchment Street.

I had a great time in the cookery theatre on Sunday, catching up with some of Hampshire’s loveliest producers and compering for some really interesting and varied demonstrators. I took over the stove for the 2pm slot, cooking with some of the fantastic products sold by the stallholders in the local food tent. These are the recipes if you fancy having a go at home.

Add 150 g fresh strawberries (50 cal) to make it up to a 600 man calorie day.

Due to various foodie engagements, we had to do 2 fast days back-to-back this week which also coincided with our swimming days. I tried to pick the most filling and sustaining recipes for fast day 10 to keep us going and I’m relieved to say, they did the trick.

Today was the last fast day before a much-anticipated trip to France to see my folks. This is where those feast days really come into their own! Whether my resolve to continue the fast days remains after a couple of days of beautiful bread, rillettes and wine, we’ll just have to wait and see…

Fast Diet recipes – Day 7

Jun 19, 2013   //   by susie   //   Blog, Fast Diet Recipes, Uncategorized  //  2 Comments

Breakfast: Poached eggs with chilli and soy (175 calories)

Lunch: Smoked salmon and dill cream cheese crispbreads (199 calories)

Dinner: Lamb and lentil koftas with tzatziki (196 calories)

Fast Diet recipes – Day 6

Jun 14, 2013   //   by susie   //   Blog, Fast Diet Recipes  //  Comments Off

Breakfast: Stewed apple breakfast pots – 195 calories

Lunch: Chicken meatball broth – 198 calories

Dinner: Carrot and feta salad – 204 calories

= 597 calories

Although our energy was running low after 2 fast days in a row, it wasn’t as much of a trauma as I’d anticipated and now there’s 4 whole feast days ahead to look forward to.
